  1. Lemon Curd Layer Cake at the High Seas Hobbit

It was an early start in the Berry Scrumptious kitchen this morning, preparing and dispatching our fresh chocolate covered strawberry gifts for International Mother's Day. So when Claire was invited by our friend, neighbour & fellow farmer's wife Carole for coffee and cake she wasn't going to say "No", especially as Carole is a talented baker.   As well as very kindly giving me the recipe for her Lemon Curd Layer Cake, Carole also gave me a wee tour of their High Seas Hobbit, a brilliantly quirky option for glamping (glamorous camping).  Just wait til you see their toilet....

  2. BBC1's The Apprentice Chutney Review

Here at Berry Scrumptious, we are big fans of the BBC1 show The Apprentice with Lord Alan Sugar, mainly because for one hour of the week we can sit and smugly shout at the TV as the two teams make catastrophic business mistakes, which of course none of the rest of us would ever do (at least not on national TV!)

In Episode 3 of the current series, the two teams had to develop a new condiment with the winning team, In Fusion, creating Pineapple Chutney with Ginger & Chili. We regularly get our handmade chocolate & fresh chocolate covered strawberries reviewed online by expert bloggers including Chocablog & Chocolatereviews, so this time thought we'd turn the tables.

  3. Don't be a neep this Halloween

As today is Halloween, there will be many a pumpkin being carved out and fitted with candles and a lot of soup being made with the innards.  Claire has been reminiscing about the "Good Old Days" when her and her brother and sister made lanterns from turnips.  A far tougher material for an "artist" to work with.  So to celebrate Halloween, we thought we'd share this photo of Claire (red head on right) and her siblings showing off their prized turnip lanterns circa 1980.

  6. Proposal by plough

We're cracking on with Spring work here on the farm.  The plough is greased up & ready to get to grips with 400 acres and as our drilling contractor, Martin, has to be finished in 5 weeks time as his wife is about to give birth, time is of the essence!  5 years ago this month, Ross also took to the plough but this time to propose.

  7. Burns Night Neeps

Tomorrow (25th January) is Burns Night.  It's a celebration of our national poet Robbie Burns and not the cause for panic in Accident and Emergency hospital departments throughout the country!

The traditional fayre served in Robbie's honour is Haggis, Neeps (turnip) and Tatties (potatoes) washed down with a good dram.  We have a wee patch of neeps here on the farm, planted last Spring and destined for feeding cattle as well as the odd pot of good soup.
